news :: Go Green at Gonwin:: Gonwin Manor Luxury Cornish holiday cottages in St. Ives
Here at Gonwin we pride ourselves on being situated in a beautiful, natural and rural landscape. It is important to us that our natural heritage and landscape are preserved and we are pleased to share this with our visitors in a sustainable way.
We are constantly striving towards providing a greener holiday cottage experience. We are currently awaiting grading from the Green Tourism Business Scheme and we are an active member of CoaST (The Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project).
As we are aware at Gonwin – you are on holiday and we certainly don’t want you to have anything but a relaxing holiday which is why you will not even notice some of the “green” aspects we have incorporated. The other elements which we ask for you help in, we have tried to make an easy lifestyle option, and many of them you will be doing at home anyway. In making these small changes you can feel satisfied that you are helping to make a big difference to maintain the beautiful environment in which we live and can keep returning to for many years to come.
Your holiday here makes a difference to the economy and environment in many ways:
Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
Use the recycling facilities provided on site for paper, glass, tins and plastics.
Green Cone system.
Within each of the cottages we supply you with a Green Cone Caddy – place all cooked and non – cooked food waste into the caddy and when full leave at Poppy Cottage and take a replacement Green Caddy. This then gets placed into the green cones on site where the waste products are naturally and environmentally friendly absorbed into the ground.
Stay Local, Eat Local, Buy Local, See Local
All of the Hampers and shopping items here are sourced locally to preserve our distinctive culture. The toiletries which you will find in our cottages are produced locally and are organic.
Use public transport, walk or cycle
In each of the cottages we have provided information about the public transport in the area, walking routes and cycling paths – what a great way to see Cornwall at its best!
Eco – Cleaning Products
We avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals and provide you will ecological cleaning products within the cottages. We are also on a septic tank system which works efficiently on eco-friendly products. No bleach or Milton sterilising products should be placed into the septic tank system, please also use the sanitary bags provided in the bathrooms.
Energy Efficiency
All the appliances in the cottages are A – Rated to minimize energy consumption. There are also cards to inform visitors to switch off TV’s when not in use. The majority of light bulbs used are energy efficient. Outdoor lighting is on a dusk to dawn sensor. Please also follow the towel system which is displayed within each of the cottage’s bathrooms.
Water conservation
All roof space on Gonwin is linked to a large water tank system which is hidden underground. We unfortunately get quite at lot of rain in Cornwall which we harvest into the tank and then use it either to fill the lake, water the gardens or wash the cars.
Our commitment to preserving the environment is an on-going process and if you have any suggestion we would be grateful to hear them. We trust you will appreciate Gonwin’s beautiful landscape as much as we do.
Thank you
